CARPET - Project details (Community for Academic Reviewing, Publishing and Editorial Technology)
Development of an Information Platform for Electronic Publishing based on Generic Publishing Tools
The transformation of scientific communication and its increasing virtualization have turned the computer desktop to the central coordinating point of many scientists in the national and global research context. In this context arose the need to disseminate scientific ideas and research results with the use of electronic publishing channels following the open-access model.
Today, there are various publication tools such as word processing, typesetting systems, programs for reference management, graphic and raw data processing, and complex programs for communication and work organization. The DFG Workshop, 23.11.2006 "Development of generic publishing tools" has shown the need to present existing approaches and publication tools bundled on an Internet platform and make this area publicly accessible. This will allow a more efficient use of existing software in the future and help avoid redundant development efforts.
The project addresses users working in scientific institutions as well as developers and providers of tools and services for scientific publishing systems.
During the project period, the following features are developed for the Internet platform:
- a catalog of existing publication tools, along with a submission mask
- a discussion forum as the collaboration tool of the CARPET community, which enables contact between developers, providers and users of publication tool and encourages the discourse on various ePublishing topics
- a knowledge base on e-publishing technology that is developed through the collaborative editing of the themes from both the project team and by the community
