The Historical Building of the Göttingen State and University Libray is a place where historical research is conducted and where the results of this research are made available to the public. We provide access to the historical collections and cultural treasures of the Göttingen State and University Library for research purposes and also host scholarly and cultural events in a special ambiance. In addition, the building hosts a number of exhibitions, for example on the history of Göttingen University.

We are happy to assist you with any questions you may have about the use of our historical and rare book holdings and to assist you in finding and borrowing specialist literature.

We offer:

• personal assistance in the Old Prints Reading Room, in the Reading Room for Manuscripts & Rare Prints and in the Map Collection
• individual workplaces, work booths
• PCs with access to catalogues, databases with electronic periodicals and full texts
• copier and scanners

On Foot

From the train station

Exit the train station in the direction of the city centre. Cross the square in the direction of the Bus Terminal, on the far side of which you can cross Berliner Straße at the pedestrian crossing with traffic lights. Walk straight on along Goethe Allee (merges into Prinzenstraße). The Historical Building is located at the corner of Prinzenstraße and Papendiek, on the banks of the Leinekanal.

By car

Leave the motorway A 7 at the Göttingen exit, and take the direct route: Kasseler Landstraße - Groner Landstraße - Groner-Tor-Straße in the direction city centre. You can park your car in the multi-storey car park Groner-Tor-Straße. Cross the Papendiek on foot. You will see the Lichtenberghof to your right. Here you will find an entrance to the Historical Building; a second entrance is located on Prinzenstraße.
